How to get super cheap train tickets for LESS than £1

Train Tickets

You can get train fares for LESS than £1 - if you put a bit of effort in.

With returns to between some parts of the country costing HUNDREDS nowadays, savings when travelling can result in lots of extra cash in your pocket.

The Megatrain website offers tickets for selected routes for as low as £1.

And with a 10% discount for NUS Extra Card holders available it means you can get from one end of the country to the other for less than a quid... sort of.

As is often the case there are some catches. There is a 50p booking fee, and the headline £1 price is only one-way, but it still means that the total cost can be as low as £2.30.

Note that not all routes are covered but with South West trains, East Midlands and Virgin Trains tickets among those available certainly most big cities and locations are connected.

And don't forget even if you can't get a ticket direct to your station you could still save cash by splitting the fare: Travelling part the way with Megatrain and then buying a standard ticket to continue your journey onward.

Another minor caveat is that all tickets are non-refundable but then from 90p a journey it won't be the end of the world if your plans do change.

The Megatrain website is definitely one to check out when planning a journey if only to see if you can save.

The website also offers direct price comparisons to coach tickets for the same trip so you may even decide it's worth skipping the train altogether!
