money student cash

Here's a six-step beginner's guide to not blowing your student loan and becoming a broke: Get on the right track to becoming the ultimate thrifty, money-wise student.

Get books on the cheap

University books are bloody expensive but fortunately there are usually plenty of copies in circulation. You can save cash by buying second hand or by being quick to grab one of your library's copies at the beginning of term.

See our guide on how to save money on University textbooks for more tips!

Don't be tempted by gifts

Grab freebies wherever you can but only if they're actually given away with no strings attached. Watch out for companies luring you with gifts when signing up to things (e.g. Bank Accounts) when there may be better deals elsewhere without flashy marketing gimmicks.

Make easy money

Don't just think about saving money but make money too. Online surveys via websites like SwagBucks are a a great way for doing this, you can get paid cash and you can easily complete them on your mobile, such as while walking home.

Walk

Walk as much as you can, it's good exercise (so you can save even more cash by ditching the gym) and completely FREE.

If it's too far to walk then look at public transport, even for longer journeys consider coaches or trains as these may well be a lot cheaper than a car.

How to cook

Check out Student Recipes online and get cooking from scratch. It's more fun, healthy and far cheaper than pre-packaged meals. Also, avoid food waste as much as you can, check out our guide on getting the most out of grub.
